Broward County’s Capital Budget Allocates $31.8M for IT Improvements

Potential projects include computer, server and hardware replacements; tech acquisitions; upgrades; and an overall network infrastructure expansion.

Over the next few years, Broward County plans to upgrade much of its technology, with $16.8 million allocated for generally funded IT improvements, plus an additional $15 million for innovations and technology enhancements in its FY 2024-2028 Capital Budget.

The funding will be used for computer, server and hardware replacements; tech acquisitions; upgrades; and an overall network infrastructure expansion.

Other notable projects include automating time and attendance processes and the county’s asset management system, plus $15 million worth of countywide technology enhancements.

In FY 2024 alone, the county plans to spend the following:
  • $996,000 on a county fiber-optic expansion 
  • $821,000 on data communication and switch replacement  
  • $750,000 on general fund computer replacements (excluding libraries) 
  • $400,000 on storage area network replacements 
  • $272,000 on server replacements 
  • $100,000 on a network segmentation upgrade
  • $90,000 on an enterprise backup expansion 

Meanwhile, larger enterprise technology services projects receiving funding between FY24 and FY28 include:
  • $6,246,000 to replace laptop and desktop computers in generally funded agencies 
  • $2,961,000 to replace data communication devices that have reached end of life  
  • $2,600,000 to replace end-of-life storage area network devices 
  • $600,000 to replace digital phones 
  • $450,000 for an enterprise backup expansion, specifically impacting the county’s servers, databases, applications, email and shared drive data
