The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has launched an online grant portal for local governments, higher education institutions, nonprofit organizations and other eligible entities to submit project proposals to protect the state’s water resources.

According to a press release from the department, “From May 1 to June 30, DEP is accepting project proposals for water-related grant programs for fiscal year 2024-25. Applicants are encouraged to submit proposals for all grant programs for which they may be eligible.”

Grant opportunities include:

  • Innovative Technology for Harmful Algal Bloom Grants: These grants are for projects that evaluate and implement innovative technologies and short-term solutions to address harmful algal blooms, preserve the state’s freshwater bodies and enforce certain water quality treatment technologies.
  • Water Quality Improvement Grants: These grants help communities address wastewater, stormwater, agricultural and other projects that reduce nutrients in water bodies.
  • Alternative Water Supply Grants: These grants allow communities to plan for and implement water conservation, water supply and water resource development projects.
  • Springs Restoration Grants: These grants focus on land acquisition to protect springs and the quality and quantity of water that flows from springs.
  • Wetlands Restoration and Protection Grants: These grants aim to help restore and protect wetlands. Priority will go to projects impacting fish and wildlife habitats, water quality, water storage and water conservation, as well as projects with at least $200,000 of non-state funds in match funding.
