The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has issued an invitation to bid (ITB), asking vendors to provide managed ethernet services to support the Florida ITS Operations Network (FION).

FION is a statewide network that connects regional transportation management centers across Florida, allowing them to share traffic information and video images.

According to the ITB, the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) section within FDOT’s Traffic Engineering and Operations Office “intends to obtain a broadband point-to-point data service to connect three sites located in Tallahassee, Tampa and Miami via two circuits.”

Specific requirements and specifications for vendors include:
  • Providing a guaranteed bidirectional throughput of one gigabit per second
  • A customer interface to a provider network that offers 1000BASE-SX ethernet via duplex multimode fiber-optic connections at specific locations
  • Service availability for 24 hours per day, seven days per week, 365 days per year
  • Coordinating with customers concerning premise equipment location, rack space and power requirements
  • Providing service transparency to customers, with the exception that if two endpoints are geographically distant from one another, the service must be equivalent to that offered by a 1000BASE-SX ethernet connection between two local devices
More information about DOT-ITB-25-9074-SJ can be found online. Vendor submissions are due at 12 p.m. on May 22. The contact for this solicitation is Sherill Johnson.
