FDOT Issues RFP for FION Optical System Upgrade

The department is seeking qualified vendors who can install and integrate new equipment with the existing Nokia 7250 IXR-R6 routers and fiber systems for statewide ITS traffic cutover to the MPLS core.

The Florida Department of Transportation is seeking proposals for a FION optical system upgrade and video distribution router additions to support camera monitoring, LMR, traffic detection and ITS applications.

According to the RFP, the project involves upgrading the FION by replacing switches and optical transmission shelves, adding MPLS routers and integrating new equipment with existing systems for ITS traffic cutover.

Additional expectations include:
  • Submitting an MPLS multiservice optical data transport network design for integration with the existing MPLS network
  • Conducting site surveys to determine installation, power and connectivity requirements
  • Submitting a detailed MPLS network design for full integration
  • Providing data sheets for proposed equipment, hardware, cabling and surge protection
  • Characterizing fiber-optic strands to verify design parameters
