The city of Fort Lauderdale has issued a request for proposals (RFP) for a wireless broadband pilot project.

According to the RFP, “the solution will utilize existing light pole infrastructure that belongs to the city of Fort Lauderdale to create a wireless mesh network and will provide unpaid Internet access to residents and neighbors in specified neighborhoods.”

The prospective vendor would work with the city’s subject matter experts to discuss any required output and help facilitate customization and design needs to enhance users’ experience.

Other required vendor services and scope of work include:
  • The proposal must provide a maintenance and support plan as part of vendors’ responses and outline the levels of support that will be available, plus associated costs for each level
  • The proposed solution must accommodate multiuser data access with no impact on the bandwidth
  • The proposed solution must have appropriate security mechanisms in place to ensure users can access the service in a secure manner
  • The proposer will be required to install the solution’s hardware on the poles identified by the city
  • The proposed solution should require no trenching, digging, or any other groundwork or environmental impact
More information about RFP No. 421-0 can be found online. Vendor questions must be submitted by 5 p.m. on March 13, and proposals are due by 2 p.m. on March 19. John Torrenga is the contact for this solicitation.
