Established in 1945 by the state Legislature, the authority has exclusive jurisdiction over all publicly owned airports in the county, including Plant City Airport, Peter O. Knight Airport, Tampa Executive Airport and Tampa International Airport.
To create its sustainability plan, the agency organized 45 authority staff from 16 different departments into four working groups focused on resource management, sustainable engagement, adoption and mitigation, and clean transport.
Based on their findings, the authority looks to execute the following procurement and tech-related goals:
- Develop a sustainability metric tracking system and database to help reduce energy consumption at terminals and airsides by 10 percent
- Update its existing sustainable procurement program to increase internal purchasing of environmentally preferable products and services
- Incorporate sustainability standards into selection criteria for tenant requests for proposals
- Establish an engagement tracking tool to monitor employee engagement in authority programs and outreach opportunities
- Integrate backup power generation technologies to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 10 percent
“All goals are set to a 2030 time frame and measured against a 2018 baseline where available data exists,” according to plan documents.
