In his new role overseeing the Associated Industries of Florida Coalition for the Future of Artificial Intelligence in Business, the former state CIO will work to build policy frameworks focused on advancing innovation and adapting emerging tech within the state.

Jamie Grant, the state’s former chief information officer, has been appointed chair of the newly formed Associated Industries of Florida (AIF) Coalition for the Future of Artificial Intelligence in Business.

The AIF, also known as “The Voice of Florida Business,” is a not-for-profit association that has advocated for prosperity and free enterprise before all three branches of state government since 1920.

As chair of the AIF’s new AI coalition, Grant says he’s looking forward to “the opportunity to collaborate with and learn from some of the most innovative teams in the world as this coalition works to support policymakers trying to maintain Florida’s position as the model for sustainable economic growth.”

The coalition’s primary goal will be establishing policy guidelines to encourage innovation and adapt emerging technology such as AI.

For example, an AIF press release said, “In 2024, Florida stands at a critical juncture on the issue of artificial intelligence, and the AIF Coalition for the Future of AI in Business aims to guide the state to responsibly embrace AI opportunities. The mission is clear — educate policymakers on the concerns of employers and help develop guidelines for accountable and innovative AI policies.”

As for what role policy has on public- and private-sector use of AI, Grant said, “I believe in allowing markets to work, that regulatory capture is an economic plague, and that it is just as impossible to create policies which guarantee only good outcomes as it is to create policies which ensure there will be no bad outcomes. Effective public policy simultaneously empowers good actors to operate freely and establishes real accountability for bad actors.”

Regarding short-term goals for the coalition, Grant told Industry Insider — Florida, “The focus of ‘today’ is doing the work necessary to lay the foundation for sustainable and repeatable success, which means a lot of community-building, listening and clearly defining the measurable objectives.”

“Tomorrow,” however, “we will begin building upon the foundation to scale the coalition’s impact,” he added.

As for businesses interested in the coalition’s work, Grant said there’s always “a seat at the table.”

“There’s an old saying that when it comes to public policy, ‘you’re either at the table or you’re on the menu,’ and I’ve seen that consistently proven true,” Grant said. “My message to businesses wanting to engage in a historically significant conversation is that there is a seat at that table, and we would welcome your insight as we work to create meaningful work product.”
