Lakeland Recruiting for Smart City Administrator

The position is responsible for planning, piloting, developing and managing Lakeland’s smart city program, overseeing emerging technology and collaborating with city stakeholders, partners, IT staff, vendors and community members.

The city of Lakeland is looking to hire a smart city administrator.

According to the job posting, the position “ensures that smart city projects are well coordinated, comply with city laws and are designed and implemented to meet the city’s business needs and goals.”

These projects fall under Lakeland’s smart city program, which uses various forms of technology, including video detection systems, AI and digital water meters to improve city safety, mobility and water management.

As for specific job responsibilities, the duty statement lists the following:
  • Inventory, catalog, document and develop a mechanism to track the city’s current smart city and technology innovation initiatives 
  • Act as liaison with other city departments, partner agencies and vendors to ensure the coordinated release of Internet of Things technology that meets city standards 
  • Collaborate with other innovation and data staff on developing a technology innovation program, a cross-departmental team and a process for soliciting, testing and evaluating creative approaches to government and community challenges 
  • Develop techniques, strategies and mechanisms for connecting community, private sector, philanthropic and university innovation with municipal government smart city initiatives 
  • Serve as an adviser to city departments and the city manager’s office on cutting-edge product design and development 
Minimum requirements for the role include a bachelor’s degree in business administration, public administration, information science, civil engineering, urban planning or another closely related field, plus four years of relevant working experience within technology, data or smart city efforts.
