Miami-Dade Innovation Authority (MDIA) seeks to partner with startup companies working on innovative solutions to enhance transportation visibility in Miami-Dade County as part of its public innovation challenge series.

According to the organization’s website, MDIA is interested in solutions that use sensors, cameras, spatial and traffic data aggregators, predictive analytics, AI, machine learning and other technologies to enhance traffic visibility across roads, sidewalks and other public spaces.

“Solutions can be stand-alone or provide an additional layer of insight via integrations but must demonstrate valuable impact on nontraditional commuting patterns or special events in a subsequent pilot,” MDIA’s website states.

Other focus areas of the challenge include:
  • Personal vehicle mobility: Solutions to reroute vehicles or provide key insights on special events such as construction or accidents
  • Pedestrian movement: Solutions that understand the movement of people and their transportation needs to help make travel safer and more efficient during special events
  • Public transportation efficiency: Solutions that track routes, arrival and departure times, adaptive signals and signal priority for public transportation
  • General road usage: Solutions that use publicly available spatial and transit data to optimize traffic flow and reduce congestion
Startups must meet the following requirements to qualify:
  • Have an existing product or minimum viable product that is ready to be tested and validated in a commercial market setting
  • Be legally registered and compliant with all relevant laws and regulations
Submissions are due by Dec. 4, 2024, at 11:59 p.m.

Once all applications are submitted, MDIA will evaluate each solution through a multistage process involving subject matter experts, an investor-led selection committee, and collaborators, including Miami-Dade County’s Office of Innovation and Economic Development (OIED), the Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW), and CoMotion and Transit Alliance Miami.

“While there are no inflexible rules and guidelines, we generally consider factors such as the level of innovation, feasibility of the proposed solution, potential for sustainable impact, financial stability, as well as diversity, equity and inclusion with regard to the executive or management team,” MDIA’s website states.
