North Miami Mayor Alix Desulme, who was recently targeted by a cyber attack, shared via social media that City Hall has resumed operations at a limited capacity starting Aug. 12 after temporarily closing its doors at the beginning of the month.

According to an article from Local10 News, the city’s IT department informed Desulme that a cyber breach occurred on Aug. 4, impacting residents’ access to various services.

Desulme confirmed this in a letter to residents, stating: “Last Sunday (Aug. 4), our city administration informed me of a serious cybersecurity incident that had affected the entire city and me personally. This incident, which targeted me as your mayor, resulted in unauthorized access to my personal Gmail accounts. As a result, sensitive personal information, including my passport details, bank statements, credit cards and private images, were potentially compromised.”

In terms of the city, the cyber attack shut down City Hall from Aug. 5 to Aug. 9 while the city’s IT department worked on getting affected services back online.

As of this morning, a recording shared via the city’s hotline offered the following updates:
  • Emergency response services, including the city’s 911 call center, remain fully operational
  • The North Miami Public Library is open and fully operational, with early voting continuing as scheduled
  • The North Miami Building Services Department is open to the public with a few caveats: permit applications will be accepted; plan review has resumed except for those submitted online; building inspections and inspection scheduling have resumed; land-use services, including development permits, certificates of use business tax receipt, processing and issuance have resumed; however, application status updates for those previously submitted online are unavailable.
  • The city’s Neighborhood Services Department is open and serving customers on a walk-in basis. The issuance of courtesy notices for non-life safety violations and life safety violation notices has resumed. The department’s licensing team is currently accepting applications for re-occupancy inspections. However, updates regarding historical information about properties, such as prior pending cases for existing violations, are currently unavailable.
  • All special events and programming facilitated by the Parks and Recreation Department will occur as scheduled. However, only cash payments are being accepted for Parks and Recreation programming.
  • All scheduled passport services through the City Clerk’s Office are postponed until further notice.

More information from the city, including additional updates, can be found online.
