The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) has recommended the city of St. Petersburg and Florida Hospital Medical Group for a Digital Equity Competitive Grant.
The $1.25 billion grant program, one of three programs of the Digital Equity Act, provides funding to eligible public and not-for-profit entities for programs or proposals that address digital inequities for underserved populations and communities in need.
St. Petersburg has been recommended for a $6.9 million award for device distribution, including hot spots and home Internet equipment, digital literacy skills training and cybersecurity and privacy training.
Florida Hospital Medical Group’s recommended $6 million award will be used to implement a “comprehensive program to address barriers to digital inclusion and improve maternal health outcomes, specifically for covered populations, including low-income patients with high-risk pregnancies,” according to the NTIA’s website.
Other uses of the medical group’s recommended funding include enhancing digital skills and health knowledge among patients, establishing a Remote Patient Monitoring and Virtual Care Program to serve high-risk pregnant patients, developing a mobile app that provides tailored health education materials and providing tablets with hot spots to patients with high-risk pregnancies, ensuring access to virtual appointments.
