On Wednesday, the Office of Broadband within the Florida Department of Commerce appointed Leandro Garcia as director.
Garcia announced his new role via LinkedIn, stating, “I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as director — Office of Broadband at FloridaCommerce.”
Kate Doyle, the interim deputy secretary for the department’s community development division, confirmed the appointment during a webinar about its Digital Connectivity Technology Program, stating Garcia took over the role from the interim Director Paul Wotherspoon, who also serves as the office’s chief of broadband funding.
As director, Garcia will help carry out the office’s mission of working with local and state government agencies, community organizations and private businesses to increase broadband Internet access throughout the state.
Before his new role, Garcia was a deputy director for the Florida Department of Commerce and, prior to that, served as a program administrator for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
He holds a bachelor’s of science degree from Florida State University.
