The Florida Department of Corrections Is Searching for a New CIO

Ruth Lang has been the agency’s chief information officer since March 2023. However, the department recently published a job posting for the role, signaling the position’s vacancy.

The Florida Department of Corrections (FDC) is searching for a new chief information officer.

Ruth Lang has served as the agency’s CIO since March 2023, bringing more than 30 years of private- and public-sector IT experience to the role.

A few of her previous positions included serving as deputy CIO for the Oregon Department of Revenue, director of consulting services for Solid Solutions Enterprises Inc., a senior principal for Kaiser Permanente and a project management office director for the city and county of San Francisco.

During her tenure as FDC’s CIO, Lang told Industry Insider — Florida in a one-on-one interview that she was most proud of the successful implementation of the agency’s integrated data management system.

“This system, has revolutionized our approach to data handling and decision-making, significantly improving operational efficiency and enabling more informed, data-driven strategic decisions,” Lang said.

She also told IIFL that the agency was looking to fund several tech projects in the next fiscal year focused on application modernization, cybersecurity enhancements, artificial intelligence and cloud computing.

Now the agency is advertising for candidates for her position.

“As an integral member of FDC’s Executive Leadership Team,” the advertisement says, “the CIO will be responsible for implementing large-scale IT projects and spearheading the department’s information technology modernization strategy.”

Other specific job duties and responsibilities include:
  • Managing and building relationships with external and internal stakeholders throughout Florida to achieve the agency’s technology goals 
  • Promoting a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to responsiveness and quality 
  • Overseeing the daily operations of FDC’s IT department to ensure that both new and existing technology systems meet or exceed organizational requirements 
  • Fostering strategic partnerships between the IT department and internal stakeholders, as well as external industry and legislative stakeholders, agency partners, policymakers, regulators and other partner organizations 
  • Proactively plan for the annual legislative cycle, including legislative bill review, providing recommended changes to Florida statutes, tracking funding gaps and issues, and creating legislative budget requests to obtain new funding for agency IT initiatives
