Department of State Asks for $16.4M for IT Projects

The department’s legislative budget request covers several tech-related projects, including increasing cloud computing capabilities, replacing desktop computers, network security enhancements and modernizing the state’s voter registration system.

The Florida Department of State is requesting a total of $16.4 million for 10 technology initiatives in its legislative budget request.

One of the department’s largest requests is $3.8 million to modernize the processes and workflows of the Florida Corporate Registry, Sunbiz.

Approximately 3,000 new business entities file electronically via Sunbiz daily, generating $500 million per year in revenue.

The requested funding covers Year 2 of a six-year completion schedule, with completion scheduled for Fiscal Year 2027-28. The project aims to streamline processes for corporate filings, provide new authentication and authorization services to secure and track changes to entity records and optimize operating costs.

Other notable IT funding requests from the department include:
  • $5 million for litigation expenses related to elections and other departmental legal needs
  • $2.5 million to competitively procure a solution for the modernization of the Florida Voter Registration System 
  • $2.4 million for increased costs with the Northwest Regional Data Center
  • $800,000 for business registry verification via a password-protected system  
  • $725,000 for Florida Planning, Accounting and Ledger Management (PALM) readiness 
  • $600,000 for cloud computing cost increases
  • $234,500 to replace desktop computing equipment 
  • $212,000 for commercial registry legacy system virtualization licensing 
  • $106,000 for network security enhancements
