Fort Myers has launched a new .gov domain name as part of “a long-term effort to strengthen the city’s brand identity, increase security and counter disinformation.”
According to a press release from the city, fortmyers.gov was vetted and approved by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) before launch.
The city’s previous domain name, cityftmyers.com, will redirect users to the new website for the next six months.
As for registering the new domain with CISA, the city submitted various pieces of evidence that it was applying on behalf of a legitimate local government.
“Switching to a .gov domain reassures residents that the information on our website is official and trustworthy,” said Richard Calkins, the city’s director of information technology, in a press release. “This transition marks a significant milestone for the city, reinforcing our commitment to innovation, transparency and community engagement.”
The .gov domain also makes it harder for cyber criminals to impersonate city officials and conduct scams, according to the statement.
Despite these changes, the city’s fire and police department websites will remain the same. However, all city employee emails, including all police and fire personnel, have transitioned to the new fortmyers.gov domain name.
