The city of Homestead has signed on to become the first city to join Workforce.Miami, a Miami-Dade County initiative that aims to bridge the gap between job seekers and local employers.
Earlier this year, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava discussed the initiative during her fifth State of the County address, stating that Workforce.Miami aims to bridge the gap between employers and job seekers in the county via its online portal.
The county partnered with local organizations to create and launch the effort as “a comprehensive workforce development platform” in October 2024.
Since then, the platform has focused on providing “job seekers with direct access to local employment opportunities, internships, apprenticeships and training programs,” plus other “wraparound services to support those navigating the job market, with a particular focus on Miami’s ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) population,” according to a press release from the county.
Homestead City Council members unanimously approved a proposal from Councilman Tom Davis last week to join the initiative, allowing employers who work with the city to post open positions on Workforce.Miami’s platform to help residents find local jobs in real time.
“This is exactly what our community needs,” Davis said in a release from the city. “So much of our community is one paycheck away from homelessness. You have a job, you get laid off and don’t have two or three months of pay in the bank to keep the mortgage running or your apartment. This will help people keep working and keep jobs in our community.”
In addition to job openings, users can also access workforce data and continuous education programs, apprenticeships, internships and certification listings via the platform.
