Broadband Development Office Seeks Comment on Speeds

The BDO is seeking public input about broadband speeds and what threshold Texas will use to determine funding eligibility. Speed thresholds are in play after the FCC raised the national benchmark.

The Texas Broadband Development Office (BDO) is looking for input on broadband speeds and potential standard changes after the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) updated its standard.

Public input is due June 2.

The FCC in March raised the 25 megabits-per-second (Mbps) download speed and 3 Mbps upload speed to 100 Mbps download speed and 20 Mbps upload speed. The move also establishes a long-term goal of 1 Gbps download speed and 500 Mbps upload speed.

The BDO, overseen by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, will use public comment to inform its recommendation to the Legislature about whether Texas should raise the speed threshold, which determines eligibility for broadband funding, according to the Texas Register.

Comments may be sent via email to broadband@cpa.texas.gov, attention to: Greg Conte, BDO director. The comments are due June 2 and may also be sent via postal mail. That address is P.O. Box 13528, Austin, Texas, 78711.
