Capriglione to Chair New House Committee for AI and Emerging Tech

Speaker of the House Dade Phelan created the committee by a Tuesday proclamation, and Rep. Giovanni Capriglione will serve as chair.

Texas created the House Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies with a Tuesday proclamation signed by Speaker of the House Dade Phelan, R-21.

State Rep. Giovanni Capriglione, R-98, will be chair of the five-member committee including Rep. Jeff Leach, R-67, Rep. Oscar Longoria, D-35, Rep. Angelia Orr, R-13, and Rep. Armando Walle, D-140.

The committee will look at the ways AI advancement and new technologies impact economy, ethics and society.

It will do so by:
  • Examining AI and emerging technologies use by public and private users
  • Determining their impact through employment, health care, national security and transportation
  • Identifying policy considerations for private and public users
  • Recommend legislative, policy, regulatory and remedial actions
The committee has the authority of any standing committee and will report findings to the Texas House of Representatives by May 16.
