The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts is looking to add a senior mainframe z/OS systems programmer to its information technology team.

For context, z/OS is the 64-bit operating system for IBM’s z/Architecture mainframes.

As a senior programmer, the chosen candidate will research, plan and define specific procedures for accomplishing tasks; develop software and computer equipment requirements; implement complex software changes; maintain complex computer software systems and install IBM mainframe software packages requested by the division.

Other job responsibilities include:
  • Modifying IBM mainframe software parameters, configuration values and options 
  • Installing corrective services to fix IBM mainframe software problems 
  • Reassembling software option tables, recompiling source code and generating and applying system modifications 
  • Testing mainframe software changes before moving them to a production environment 
  • Managing the installation, maintenance and support of the Db2 (a set of relational database products offered by IBM) data-sharing groups as well as non-data-sharing subsystems 
  • Managing the installation, maintenance and support of Db2-related products and tools on the z/OS platform 
  • Documenting all mainframe system software changes 
  • Assisting users and programmers with mainframe software features and problems
  • Communicating any potential problems or benefits of mainframe software changes to management 
  • Performing rotating on-call duties related to z/OS and other mainframe software and hardware support  
Preferred qualifications for the job include:
  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science, management information systems or another related field 
  • Experience with z/OS third-party vendor product installation, maintenance and support 
  • Experience with utility programs, including IDCAMS, IEBGENER, IEBCOPY, ADRDSSU and SORT
  • Experience with scripting languages, including REXX, CLIST and SAS 
  • Experience with system management facility, risk management framework and WLM, an IBM product that manages the processing of workloads 
  • Experience with mainframe change control products
  • Experience with resource access control facility and zSecure Suite, an IBM product that automates security administrative tasks 
  • Experience with job entry subsystems 2 or 3, job control language, time-sharing option, interactive system productivity facility and system modification program extended 
  • Experience with communication server and transmission control protocol/Internet protocol 
  • Experience with IBM z/OS management facility, coupling facility and parallel sysplex 
  • Experience with customer information control system 
The position has a monthly salary range of $9,800 to $10,350, and the application deadline is ongoing.
