County’s Probation Office Suffered Brief Ransomware Attack

No ransom was paid in the weekend incident, which was limited in scope.

The Hidalgo County Adult Probation Office is recovering from a ransomware attack over the weekend.

The incident happened Saturday but was resolved Monday, Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez confirmed.

A ransomware attack blocks the user/victim from accessing information in exchange for ransom.

Cortez said the office was able to retrieve the information without having to pay a ransom.

The Adult Probation Office was the only affected office, Cortez said. The judge also said the probation office runs under a different security system than other county offices.

Cortez said the office was back to normal and said no harm was caused.
