Data Center Build Awaits Final Approval

An Austin-based data center company continues to expand its footprint in the state.

Garland officials are set to approve plans for a new data center.

Austin-based Digital Realty plans to build the almost 180,000 square-foot tech campus. Jacobs Engineering designed the new data center, which was approved last month by Garland’s planning and zoning commission. The Garland City Council will get the final say on the project next week.

The shell data center building will cost almost $60 million and is set to open in 2024, according to planning documents filed with the state.

Digital Realty is one of the world’s largest data center operators, with almost 300 locations in more than two dozen countries. It operates over a dozen data centers in North Texas.

Along with the new Garland campus, the tech company is building a similar facility in Lewisville.

Demand for Dallas-Fort Worth data center space has grown, and D-FW saw record use of data center space last year. North Texas has ranked among the top five data center markets in the U.S. for years.
