Tribune News Service — Denver-based Rowan Digital Infrastructure has begun work on a $900 million hyperscale data center campus in Medina County, just west of San Antonio.
The project, called Cinco, is located on a 440-acre site near Lytle just north of Interstate 35 in an unincorporated area of the county. It’s the first project of this size in Texas for Rowan.
Early site work is underway on the 300-megawatt data center, with construction scheduled to start this fall. Rowan expects the facility to be operational 18 to 24 months after breaking ground.
Once it’s up and running, it will provide cloud storage and artificial intelligence services for an unnamed customer described as one of the nation’s top five technology companies, Rowan officials said.
The design likely will feature one or two large data-hall buildings in its first phase, with additional land reserved for potential future expansion, said Martin Romo, senior director of economic development and external affairs at Rowan.
He said the company also is building on-site substations to support the 300-megawatt load. AEP Texas will be the power provider for the project.
Rowan plans to power the Cinco campus primarily with hydroelectric, solar and wind generation.
In addition to its sustainability goal, it’s aiming to be a good neighbor.
“We are ensuring operating hours, site logistics, tree preservation, erosion and sediment control, dust control, staffing plans and landscaping plans are all in place and align with the community’s expectations,” the company’s website says.
The campus layout includes setbacks of at least 200 feet from property lines, and Rowan has agreed to third-party monitoring of its traffic, noise and dust effects on neighboring properties.
“Our community welcomes development that is done the right way — openly, responsibly and with long-term benefits for our residents,” Lytle Mayor Ruben Gonzalez said. “Rowan’s commitment to transparency, sustainability and partnership shows what it means to be a good neighbor. This is exactly the kind of investment that strengthens our economy while respecting the values of our community.”
Rowan also hosted an open house in March for residents seeking more information on the project. It was attended by more than 230 people.
The project is expected to create about 600 construction jobs and more than 40 permanent jobs.
Rowan was founded in 2020 and is backed by Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners. It has focused on building large, sustainable data campuses for hyperscale tenants — companies that need vast, customized computer space but don’t necessarily want to build it themselves.
The project comes amid surging demand for digital infrastructure, driven by higher cloud computing and AI workloads.
The San Antonio region has become a hot spot for such development. West Bexar County and Medina County are especially attractive because of their access to power and fiber infrastructure, flat topography and distance from hazards such as airports and water towers.
