Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport on Wednesday awarded Willow Inc. for its WillowTwin implementation, the airport’s first digital infrastructure platform.

The Digital Transformation Excellence Award was announced during the DFW Airport Business Opportunity Forum, a hybrid presentation given twice a year.

WillowTwin, a digital twin, mirrors runway space and Terminal D and is still in its early years. The amount for the original contract was about $2.9 million, according to airport board documents.

The digital twin:

  • Is a virtual model of a physical object
  • Can model assets, processes and systems
  • Provides spatial and visual representation
  • Combines data analytics with management capabilities
  • Provides real-time situational awareness and efficiency

Using data from the digital twin and other sources, DFW Airport leadership says it wants to create seamless experiences for all travelers through real-time information. Bill Grozdanich, DFW’s vice president of controls and analytics, summarized digital transformation goals and achievements.

“Our digital transformation positions us to be a data-driven organization that can capitalize on our strengths and quickly identify and address our areas of concern by analyzing data at a deeper level,” he said.

Vendors are required to adopt technology to move airport transformation forward. Transformation includes streamlining processes, lowering emissions and implementing forward-thinking technology.

During the forum for vendors, contractors and business people interested in doing work with the second-largest airport in the U.S., leaders discussed the Terminal C modernization and planning for Terminal F.

The airport directly employs 200,000 people, generates $37 billion for the North Texas economy and is larger than Manhattan. It is one of the largest special districts in the state.

The opportunities forums are posted to its YouTube channel, and the Q3 procurement forecast is posted on the airport’s procurement pages.
