Funding for Broadband Advancements Continues to Flow

The state agriculture department will distribute $23.9 million to rural hospitals while the Broadband Development Office readies for additional federal grant applications.

Broadband efforts at the state level continue to fund efforts to improve access to employment, education, communication, health, community and essential services.

On the telehealth front, the Broadband Development Office (BDO) has tapped the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) to disperse $23.9 million for rural hospitals to make broadband investments.

The money is intended to help expand and upgrade technology that will improve medical services and telehealth.

The BDO continues its work on equity planning as well.

The agency, under the purview of the Comptroller of Public Accounts, announced this week that the Texas Digital Opportunity Plan was accepted by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA).

This planning document outlines eligibility requirements for additional Digital Equity Act State Capacity Grant monies.

A projected grant of $55.6 million could be used for:
  • Digital equity planning
  • Maintaining equity planning
  • Channel grants to subgrantees
  • Evaluating any subgrantees' efforts
  • Administrative costs

The NTIA’s current Notice of Funding Opportunity requires that application be made by May 28.
