Houston Lays Out Plans for Several Tech Systems

One of the city’s top projects is a $3.2 million replacement and upgrade of electrical switchgear to install new technology.

The city of Houston has shared plans to implement several different technology projects within its FY 2023-2027 Capital Improvement Plan.

The municipality has allocated funding for several purchases, including new mobile radios, hardware, software, industrial tablets and tech upgrades.

Here are the city’s plans, rounded:

  • $3.2 million for the replacement and upgrade of electrical switchgear in City Hall. The replacement would allow for the installation of new state-of-the-art technology.
  • $2 million for the purchase, installation and configuration of hardware and software to increase storage capacity for videos related to in-car cameras, interview rooms and body cameras.
  • $652,000 to purchase mobile radios for police vehicles.
  • $620,000 to design, install and integrate a multifactor authentication solution within the city’s current VPN environment.
  • $580,000 to update the city’s asset management tracking and reporting system to track new assets, identify assets reaching end of life and understand maintenance costs.
  • $68,000 for a security system upgrade for the city’s Gragg Park/Wheeler Street Complex, including access control and cameras for park community centers, aquatics and maintenance barns.
  • $66,000 for new industrial tablets for field code enforcement officers.
