Home to San Antonio, the county has 2.1 million residents and spans 1,240 square miles. Established in 1836, it once covered the majority of the Republic of Texas’ western lands. As time passed, 128 counties were created from the original. Today, Bexar is Texas' fourth-most populated county and expects to add 1 million residents by 2040.

Budget: The county budget for 2022-2023 is $2.9 billion, with $33.5 million set aside for the IT department, according to its 2022-2023 adopted budget.
Leadership: County Judge Peter Sakai was elected in 2022; the judge acts as the presiding officer and a voting member of the county commissioners court. He also oversees all county departments.
The county CIO is Mark Gager. The department is divided into the following: office of the CIO, enterprise architecture, information security, project management and solutions delivery.
Staff: There are 137 full-time positions in IT, serving more than 5,000 county employees.

IT “is responsible for the architecture, design, development, implementation, security, maintenance and support of the technology infrastructure, enterprise information systems and end-user computing resources across all Bexar County offices and departments,” according to the budget documents.
The county in 2021 approved $25.2 million from American Rescue Plan funds for broadband investment.
