State agencies are due to submit their artificial intelligence inventories to the state by Monday in response to House Bill 2060, which also established the AI Advisory Council.

The inventories will include automatic decision systems in use, development or procurement by agencies and will in turn be used for legislative reporting, due by Dec. 1.

The AI council met with agencies in March, May and June, and meeting videos are at the council website. These offer a preview of how agencies are approaching AI.

Testimony included (in agenda order):
  • Texas Department of Information Resources
  • Texas Department of Transportation
  • Teachers Retirement System
  • Texas Education Agency
  • Employee Retirement System
  • Department of Family and Protective Services
  • Health and Human Services Commission
  • Office of the Attorney General
  • Texas Department of Public Safety
  • Texas Department of Criminal Justice
  • Texas Department of Insurance
The council is charged with assessing the need for an AI code of ethics in state government, reviewing automated decision systems, evaluating risks and benefits associated with automated decision items and recommending administrative actions for state agencies to ensure AI systems are thoughtfully and ethically developed.
