Tens of millions of dollars for small Texas airports is tucked into the upcoming state biennial budget, including for technology, and some of the funding is earmarked for use beginning in September.

The money was included under the Department of Transportation (TxDOT) section in the budget.

The South Texas International Airport, operated by the city of Edinburg, announced that it received $10 million from the state and will pair it will $1.1 million from the city to fund airport improvements.

The airport serves state and federal agencies involved in border security operations and is the main emergency response staging area for the Rio Grande Valley region, according to the news release.

Listed upgrades include “the integration of advanced technologies,” but these aren’t specified. Additional plans include improvements and replacements of runway lighting, navigational aids, fixtures, power supply and transformers.

The Abilene Regional Airport was allocated $20 million for a statewide firefighting headquarters. The airport opened the Abilene Airtanker Base last year in partnership with Texas A&M University.
