Sven Hahues will lead the University of Houston System’s (UHS) information security initiatives as the new chief information security officer (CISO), a role he undertook this week.

Hahues served two decades at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), last serving as CISO alongside duties as deputy chief information officer.

UH Vice Chancellor and CIO Dennis A. Fouty announced the appointment Feb. 26 in a letter to the UHS community. He outlined Hahues’ accomplishments as a leader and overseeing FGCU’s cybersecurity programming and growth.

"I'm excited and looking forward to join the UH family and making new friends,” Hahues told Industry Insider Texas via email. “I can't wait to meet everyone and contribute to the security of the campus.”

He will work with all information security officers in UHS “to ensure the safety of the current environment, as well as offering security oversight and governance for new initiatives,” Fouty said via email.

Hahues will oversee seven people who serve some 7,033 non-student employees and 46,676 students. March 4 was his start date.

At FGCU, he was CISO and deputy CIO from August 2021 to the present, senior director of infrastructure from January 2016 to August 2021, and director of business technology services from January 2014 to January 2016, according to his LinkedIn account. Prior to that, he was a senior network engineer from June 2004 to January 2013.

Mary Dickerson, the Houston system’s previous CISO, is now at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. She has been associate vice president and chief information security officer since August 2023, according to her LinkedIn profile.
