Tarrant Appraisal District Restores Online Tool After Ransomware Attack

A Romanian-based hacking group, Medusa, attacked TAD’s computer system in March and posted information from it on the dark web this month. Documents published by Medusa show tax exemption applications and employee files.

Tarrant County’s online protest tool is again working after it was taken down after a ransomware attack.

A Romanian-based hacking group, Medusa, attacked TAD’s computer system in March and posted information from it on the dark web this month.

Documents published by Medusa show tax exemption applications and employee files. Some tax exemption forms require a driver’s license, Social Security or Federal Tax ID number. Homestead exemption forms ask for a copy of the owner’s driver’s license.

The agency says property owners now have until May 24 to protest the values of their homes. The original deadline was May 15. Typically, property owners have 30 days after they receive their value notice to protest the value of their home. Notices were sent last week.

The district sets property appraisals and administers exemptions for tax purposes.
