The Texas Historical Commission (THC), which oversees 39 significant state sites, would like to add online ticketing and online shopping for its visitors.

The agency estimates it needs $980,000 for its IT modernization efforts, which would include online ticketing and other enhancements to increase visitor interest, according to its legislative appropriations request. The funding includes $590,000 in fiscal year 2026 and $390,000 in FY2027.

New online infrastructure, hardware upgrades, computer replacements and network equipment are needed for the public to make reservations for family visits, camps and other events, according to the document. Visitors must pay on site or by telephone, email or fax, which is not only inconvenient, the commission argues, but not secure. The agency would also like an online store to sell merchandise.

As to staff, there are two proposed IT positions — one for cybersecurity and one for digital asset management. There are 12 full-time positions under its information technology director, according to the documents.

The historical commission maintains historic sites, facilitates preservation, administers grants, establishes local commissions and administers state and federal preservation laws. This year, it launched its new website.
