Tracking the Spend: Ag Department's 5 Largest Buys This Year

The Department of Agriculture, which oversees food regulation as well as the state's school lunch programs, has spent the most money on nutrition-related services including management software.

The Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) spent $990,000 between Jan. 4 and March 3 on about 22,100 purchase orders.

The commission is tasked with regulating food sales, protecting crops from pests and diseases, dispersing grants, administering school lunches and breakfasts, and marketing products and culture through the GO TEXAN campaign as seen at the State Fair of Texas.

As for specific categories, DOA spent $498,249 on purchased contracted services and $294,852 on personal property — maintenance and repair — computer software — expensed. The agency spent about $7.9 million in these types of procurement in 2022, with the highest overall spending at $988,598 in August.
