According to the department’s website, TxDMV’s mission is “to serve, protect and advance the citizens and industries in the state with quality motor vehicle-related services.”
The website also states that the department accumulates more revenue for the state than it spends on its own operations. For example, for “every $1 the department spends, it collects an additional $10 for other state purposes. Most of the additional funds are used to build and maintain the state’s transportation infrastructure.”
As for the department’s top five IT goods purchases, TxDMV spent approximately $6.7 million. Here with rounding, are those purchases, according to the Texas Comptroller’s (CPA) “Payment to Payee” visualization:
- $3.3 million to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, which manages inmates in state prisons, state jails and private correctional facilities.
- $1.8 million to the Texas Department of Information Resources, which delivers technology solutions to state and local government entities.
- $818,285 to Taylor Communications Inc., which provides customer communication products, services and technologies.
- $533,361 to Texas GovLink Inc., a management consulting and technology outsourcing company based in Austin.
- $238,847 to Southwest Research Institute, an independent and nonprofit applied research and development organization out of San Antonio.
Regarding specific purchases, TxDMV spent $4.2 million on contracted services, $957,829 on computer services, $772,208 on IT services and $771,432 on telecommunications.
