The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act is widely felt to be a “once in a generation” reinvestment to modernize the country’s aging infrastructure through extensive upgrades touching every sector from transportation and water to energy, digital connectivity, and the resilience and rehabilitation of our nation’s natural resources. However, having a foundation of best-in-class technology to support the physical infrastructure is key to delivering on the promise of “smart” and “safe” communities.
In order to assess the material condition of the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, the leadership of Houston Metro partnered with SAP and leveraged their Enterprise Asset Management System. Central to the revitalization effort was redesigning the asset structures of their bus, facilities and light rail corridors to make better use of an Asset Health Condition approach to maintaining the network. With its foundations in the best practices of ISO55000x, a State of Good Repair methodology was imprinted atop existing maintenance practices and a foundation of reporting was implemented to support national infrastructure reporting through the FTA and FHWA.
