2014 Year in Review: Corrections Scans 200 Million Inmate Documents, Completes SOMS Project

Story #15: The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation this spring finished converting some 200 million documents into electronic images — a major milestone that enables law enforcement, the courts, the Attorney General’s Office and other state and federal officials to access files with a computer. The Strategic Offender Management System (SOMS) modernized legacy computer systems so officials can obtain access to accurate and complete offender information, and consolidate intake, history and tracking of inmates across its more than 30 institutions. Deloris Paschal, chief of the Correctional Case Records Services, said previous tasks associated with paper files have been eliminated and the department expects major gains in savings and efficiency.
