2014 Year in Review: Newsom Jabs Government IT, Vendors -- Again

California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom remains discontented with advances in government IT, telling an audience in October that the public sector is woefully behind the times and on the "cutting edge of 1973."

Story #20: California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom remains discontented with advances in government IT, telling an audience at the Techmanity conference in San Jose in October that the public sector is woefully behind the times and on the "cutting edge of 1973." Newsom repeated his call for a full-scale move to the cloud, and he criticized a culture of incumbency that stifles emerging technologies. Specifically, Newsom said the state continues to struggle with legacy systems patched over the decades. The California Department of Technology this summer launched CalCloud — a private cloud for state and local agencies operated in partnership with IBM. State CIO Carlos Ramos has said California is working to adopt cloud technologies where appropriate.
