2014 Year in Review: State CIO Explains Cloud Policy

Since last summer when the state debuted its CalCloud arrangement with IBM, some in the vendor community had expressed confusion about when and how state customers are allowed to purchase cloud services.

Story #3: California CIO Carlos Ramos, in a keynote at the State of Technology Industry Forum hosted in December by Techwire, sought to clarify what he said are misunderstandings about CalCloud and the state’s Cloud First policy, and outlined how the state is working with a range of vendors to provide hosted services. In the months since July when the state debuted its CalCloud arrangement with IBM, some in the vendor community had expressed confusion about when and how state customers are allowed to purchase cloud services, particularly if they want to choose something outside the CalCloud environment. Ramos said CalCloud is the preferred choice, but government customers can look elsewhere if CalCloud doesn’t meet their needs.
