In May, Gov. Jerry Brown appointed Chris Cruz to the No. 2 job at the California Department of Technology — chief deputy director of operations. As the former CIO and deputy director at the Department of Health Care Services, Cruz oversaw a $1 billion project portfolio and some of California’s biggest IT initiatives. In 2015, Cruz spearheaded a cloud readiness assessment of the state’s major health IT systems. In an email to staff, Department of Technology Director Carlos Ramos said Cruz is “well-known in the IT community as an innovative and cutting-edge leader in public-sector IT.” In March, Cruz was named to Government Technology’s annual Top 25 Doers, Dreamers and Drivers list of change-makers in the public sector.
