With 2015 coming to a close, Techwire is counting down its Top 10 news stories of the year. Watch as we unveil the people, projects and events that made news during the year gone by.

The California Employment Development Department (EDD) in June unveiled a new Web portal where current recipients of unemployment benefits can manage their claims. UI Online is now available 24/7 on desktop and mobile devices in English and Spanish. Registered users can certify for benefits, get information on processed payments, view and change scheduled appointments, and more, without calling a service representative. EDD officials say certifying benefits through the Web will save at least two or three days of processing time. Californians must re-certify for unemployment benefits every two weeks. Loree Levy, EDD deputy director of public affairs, told reporters during a press briefing that the system will “revolutionize how we provide critical unemployment benefits” to Californians at their time of need.
