2015 Year in Review No 4: State Cloud Initiative Reduces Rates after Rocky First Year

The Department of Technology was forced to rethink CalCloud after a year in operation, acknowledging fewer departments signed up than the state anticipated amid cost, competition and security concerns. In August, CalCloud’s rates were reduced roughly 50 percent or more, depending on the configuration, and security was enhanced so departments can feel more comfortable migrating sensitive information to the platform. The state also is opening the field to more vendors so they can compete to host services, converting CalCloud from a private cloud into more of a hybrid model. Chris Cruz, department chief deputy director of operations, predicted a “huge spike in adoption based on the new strategy we have in place.”
