Attorney General Kamala D. Harris plans to announce a first-of-its-kind criminal justice open data initiative during a press event in Los Angeles at 11:30 a.m. today. A livestream of the press conference will be available at https://oag.ca.gov.

The new data-driven initiative "embraces transparency in the criminal justice system to strengthen trust, enhance government accountability and inform public policy," Harris’ office said in a press release.

The California Department of Justice (DOJ) recently issued a request for offer (RFO) proposal to implement an open data portal that will allow for the phased release of DOJ data sets to the public in open formats. The RFO states that the open portal would "enhance government accountability and transparency, result in robust policy research and could spur innovation."

The RFO specifies that the proposed platform would be architected and built on a FedRAMP-compliant cloud infrastructure, leverage Google Analytics or an equivalent solution and integrate with DOJ’s Drupal Web Content Management System via iFrame.

The proposed platform would also allow end users to search for and browse the DOJ’s entire library of public data sets as defined by the DOJ, provide a standard API that will allow developers to programmatically interact with the data online, and include geo-coding functionality and a robust data visualization capability.
