Ammunition sales to be reported electronically in LA

A pilot program requiring ammunition sellers to send electronic sales records to the Los Angeles Police Department is being launched this week, according to an article on The Daily News.

Stores that sell ammunition are required to keep printed logs of ammunition sales, and the LAPD is required to deploy officers periodically to inspect the logs. The program will instead require sellers to digitally send in the records.

"The way we do it now is [police] have to go out and manually look at the logs, and it’s a nightmare," Councilman Mitch Englander, a reserve officer who supports the program, told The Daily News. "Often, they need to ask for volunteers or assign reserve officers to the work."

The LAPD will be testing out the program on large sports stores in the Los Angeles area. After two months, they will give recommendations for a city law that will mandate the system.
