Just weeks after announcing that she was stepping away from her role as senior counselor to Gov. Gavin Newsom, Amy Tong has been appointed to the California Racial Equity Commission.

Tong was appointed to the commission, which operates within the Governor’s Office of Land Use and Climate Innovation, on Feb. 27.

The commission was created by a Newsom executive order in September 2022 with the aim of “addressing structural racism and advancing racial equity,” according to its website.

“Amy brings deep experience in state leadership and public service, most recently serving as senior counselor to Governor Gavin Newsom. Her career spans roles leading technology, operations and innovation efforts across California government — all grounded in improving how government serves people,” the office wrote in a post on LinkedIn.

Tong’s prolific public service career spans more than three decades and includes leadership roles at the California Government Operations Agency (GovOps), California Department of Technology (CDT), Office of Systems Integration, and California Health and Human Services Agency (CalHHS), among others.

Tong holds a Master of Business Administration degree and a Bachelor of Science degree in management information systems from California State University, Sacramento. Her appointment does not require Senate confirmation.
