(TNS) — Amid the push for improvements in artificial intelligence, tech companies revealed plans in September to slash well over 1,000 Bay Area jobs, even as the region as a whole sees an increase in employment.
Since the start of September, tech companies disclosed plans to eliminate a combined 1,196 jobs. The cuts were all described as permanent.
Those layoffs include Oracle with 441, affecting workers in Redwood City, Santa Clara and Pleasanton; Uber with 390 cuts in San Francisco and Sunnyvale; PayPal with 251 layoffs at the company’s headquarters in San Jose; Intel with 52 cuts in Santa Clara; and LeeMah Electronics with 62 layoffs in Brisbane.
The revelations arrive on the heels of a report from the state Employment Development Department that while the Bay Area overall gained 7,800 jobs in August, employers cut a net total of 2,900 tech jobs.
The number of tech company layoff announcements so far in 2026 through Sept. 18 totals roughly 13,900 – about 36.6% more than the nearly 10,170 disclosed cutbacks by the industry for all of 2025.
So far during 2026, Menlo Park-based Meta Platforms has slashed the most jobs in the Bay Area, based on its disclosed intentions to eliminate 3,715 positions, a review of WARN filings shows.
Oracle disclosed plans to chop 1,093 Bay Area jobs, Amazon revealed plans to cut 917 area positions, Cisco Systems disclosed its intention to eliminate 706, and LinkedIn decided to cut 585 jobs, according to WARN notices filed in 2026.
Rounding out the 10 tech companies with the largest Bay Area layoffs so far in 2026 are: Intuit with 543 job cuts; eBay with 469 staffing reductions; Uber Technologies with 463 layoffs; Lucid Group with 455 cutbacks; and Walmart with 394 job cuts.
