CalPrivacy Recruiting for Enforcement Deputy Director Role

The agency created to safeguard the digital privacy of California consumers is looking for someone to lead that mission as its deputy director of enforcement.

The California Privacy Protection Agency (CalPrivacy) is in the final stretch of its recruitment for the executive role responsible for legal decisions and enforcement action, according to a soon-to-close job posting.

That post was previously held by Michael S. Macko, an attorney with a deep background in public- and private-sector litigation and investigation.

Macko’s resume includes time as corporate counsel for Amazon’s government and regulatory litigation division and as a trial attorney for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s enforcement division, among other positions.

The new deputy director of enforcement will be expected to bring knowledge and experience related to state government and the regulatory space, and must be licensed to practice law in the state.

The role also includes the development of policy, management of the agency’s complaint system and management of professional staff.

CalPrivacy was created in November 2020 through the voter-approved California Privacy Rights Act, which created new consumer protections for residents and gave the agency the authority to implement and enforce new rules.

Some of the agency’s recent work includes the creation of the Delete Request and Opt‑out Platform, which allows residents to request the removal of their personal data from hundreds of data brokers in a single interaction.

The role pays between $12,131 and $21,370 per month and is a career executive assignment position.
