The California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS) has appointed Ashish Jain to the newly created, executive position of chief technology officer (CTO) for the pension system.
"I believe business needs should drive technology in any effective organization and the proper adoption of technology can greatly improve business efficiency and productivity," Jain said in a press release. "This is an exciting time to lead CalSTRS’ technology group and I look forward to working with CalSTRS’ business groups to strengthen the role technology can play in achieving business successes throughout the system."
Prior to the creation of the new CTO position, the head of the agency’s information technology program was under the operations division, according to a spokesperson.
Most recently, Jain served as the deputy chief information officer for California Correctional Health Care Services where he was responsible for the oversight of the agency’s information technology architecture, applications, governance, policies and strategic planning. He has also served in technical leadership positions at both the California Public Employees’ Retirement System and the Department of General Services, according to the announcement.
With a portfolio valued at $170 billion, CalSTRS is the largest educator-only pension fund in the world.
