Chris Maio appointed CIO for Secretary of State’s Office

Chris Maio has been appointed as chief information officer (CIO) for California Secretary of State (SOS) Debra Bowen’s office, SOS spokesperson Nicole Winger said Wednesday.

Maio began his position on March 1, and replaces former CIO, Mary Winkley, who was appointed by Governor Jerry Brown as assistant secretary of program and portfolio management for the California Technology Agency in November 2011.

Maio has worked at the Secretary of State’s office for nearly six years, the last three as chief of its Information Technology Division, and he will continue in that role jointly with his new position as CIO.

With more than 22 years of state service, Maio started his career in licensing and enforcement at the Department of Consumer Affairs. He went on to work in all facets of information technology at Consumer Affairs as a senior technical specialist and in management, joining the SOS management team in 2007.

Secretary Bowen’s current priorities for the IT Division are making online voter registration available to Californians before the November 2012 election; replacing the existing statewide voter registration database with a new bottom-up system that integrates with county election management systems; and developing California Business Contact, an automated system that will replace many of the antiquated paper-based business filing processes and enable customers to file documents and request records online 24 hours a day, according to Winger.
