Comcast Awards Scholarships, Computers to College-Bound Students

Nearly 200 graduating high school seniors received scholarships June 11 on the steps of the California State Capitol, courtesy of Comcast’s Leaders and Achievers scholarship program. The program — in its seventh year — gives outstanding high school seniors a helping hand as they head off to college.

Jake Gorton, of Vista del Lago High School in Folsom — wearing a dark suit and dubbed one of the “men in black” by master of ceremonies Tony Lopez — said he found out about the program from his high school counselor. He filled out forms, wrote an essay and received a $1,000 Comcast Leaders and Achievers scholarship, one of 191 presented this year. In addition to the scholarships, 20 students won laptop computers in a drawing.

Chloe Yang from Balboa High School in San Francisco and Maryori Conde from Animo Inglewood Charter High School in Inglewood, each won Comcast Founders Scholarships of $10,000.
