Commentary: CIOs Among Speakers at UC Tech Conference Next Week

“For me, like for many of you, UC Tech is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about each other and to collectively set the stage for the year ahead,” writes Van Williams, chief information officer and vice president for information technology for the University of California.

UC Tech, our largest community gathering of the year, is coming up next week. I, along with the chief information officers (CIOs) from across the system, look forward to welcoming you to San Diego and online. For me, like for many of you, UC Tech is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about each other and to collectively set the stage for the year ahead. The year’s incredible UC Tech Conference steering committee has created several program tracks that are sure to inspire and invigorate you all.

In addition to continuing to serve as executive sponsors of the conference, the UC CIOs will also be attending the conference in force this year. Learn more about the CIOs attending the conference and be sure to say “Hi!” if you see them in the wild.

If you were considering registering, online registration is still open. Please register and tag me on LinkedIn or Twitter to let me know. I can’t wait to see you there! For details about the conference schedule and updates, please bookmark the 2022 UC Tech Conference landing page.

Throughout the conference, the CIOs will be presenting and/or attending sessions and meetings where we will learn and exchange insights with all of you.

The details:
  • Monday at 5 or 6 p.m.: The conference begins with a virtual (5-6 p.m.) and in person (6-9 p.m.) reception.
  • Tuesday from 9-10:45 a.m.: We kick off UC Tech Conference sessions both virtually and in person at the Price Center Theater at UC San Diego. We will start with the 40-year tradition of welcome by our venue host, who is Vince Kellen, CIO for UC San Diego. Following this, the ITLC and I will provide an update on the state of the UC Tech community and the road ahead in our annual CIO address, “The New-New UC Tech.” The kickoff will conclude with our honored keynote speaker.
  • Tuesday from noon to 1:30 p.m.: A CIO Meet & Greet, offering in-person participants an opportunity to network and enjoy lunch together in the Matthews Quad.
  • Tuesday starting at 6 p.m.: The Information Technology Leadership Council (ITLC)* will host the UC Tech Awards ceremony reception at the Birch Aquarium. The ceremony will be livestreamed as well for all conference attendees and their guests. The annual UC Tech Awards program, sponsored by the ITLC, recognizes achievements in IT that advance the university’s missions of teaching, research, public service and patient care; or that improve the effectiveness of university processes. This year, we expanded awards to include a total of six categories. In addition, we will be naming two of these categories after two very special individuals this year.
  • Tuesday at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to noon, the UC IT blog team will be available at a booth in the Price Center West Ballrooms A/B. Please stop by so we can learn more about you and your stories. There will be gifts and a chance to exchange important news that you won’t want to miss!

For those attending online, we hope to be in touch digitally via email and our LinkedIn group. Feel free to search and/or use the hashtag #UCTech to share UC Tech conference-related posts.

If you see me at this year’s conference either in person or online, please do be sure to say hello. If I miss you at this year’s conference, I look forward to saying hello whenever our paths may cross.
