J.R. Wright is taking on the position after Michele Williams retired following a 12-year stint as CIO, according to a city press release. Wright has held two previous municipal IT management roles in California, from 2018-2023 in Merced and from 2023-2024 in Torrance. Prior to that, he worked for DirectLine Technologies in Modesto for 18 years, including serving as chief technology officer and chief operating officer.

At the city governments of Merced and Torrance, Wright supervised network infrastructure and application teams and participated in infrastructure planning, vendor management and team development.

“As technology continues to evolve, I look forward to collaborating with the residents and businesses of Culver City to ensure we stay ahead of the curve,” Wright said in the statement. “I am deeply committed to serving this community, and I am eager to engage with residents, partner with fellow public agencies, and implement innovative solutions that align with Culver City’s ongoing focus on sustainability, inclusivity and progress. I am thrilled to be a part of this vibrant, forward-thinking community, and I’m confident that together, we will accomplish great things.”

He will lead the IT Department and report to City Manager John Nachbar.

Culver City, with a population of about 39,000, has a total budget of $178 million for fiscal year 2024-25, and the IT Department has a budget of about $9 million. The city’s proposed projects portal lists several forthcoming technology opportunities, including enterprise document management, replacing the timekeeping system and upgrading the radio system.

Outside his professional life, Wright enjoys coaching sports — according to his LinkedIn profile, he coached in the Turlock Youth Soccer Association from 2007-2016.
